In the early hours of Wednesday, 27 January, Trevor was in a single-car accident.
He lost control and his car careened off Grafton Road into the forest. He went head on into a tree and spun off before coming to a stop. The force compacted the front of the car so severely that it crushed both his legs. He suffered bi-lateral compound fractures to his femurs, dislocated knees and a broken sternum. He had the strength and adrenaline to pull himself into the backseat in search of his phone. He called his wife Liz for help, half-conscious and unaware of his location, and she and Carolyn went searching for him.
After finding him losing consciousness in the backseat and realizing the severity of the scene 911 was called and the girls did their best to slow the bleeding and keep him conscious. The Bowen Island Fire Dept. and Ambulance Service took over on arrival, taking 40 minutes with the Jaws of Life and 2 hours in total to remove him from the pulverized vehicle.
He was water-taxied to Lionsgate Hospital in Vancouver, brought to Resuscitation in critical condition, and taken into surgery several hours later. Post-surgery he was brought to the Intensive Care Unit for 24 hours where it was touch-and-go for awhile.
On Saturday he underwent a second surgery to attempt to repair some more of the damage. We were told the injuries are so complex that most surgeons wouldn't touch the case, but he was given two of the best orthopedic surgeons in the west. He has further surgeries ahead, but his doctors (Liz and Carolyn call them the Super-Surgeons because they've been so good) are cautiously saying he'll walk again.
We're creating this group in the hopes that some of you may be willing to donate to his ever-increasing medical costs. Liz and Trevor have two young children at home and are not assured of a settlement, and we feel that money should be the last thing they need to worry about at this time. If you are able to make a donation of any amount, it would be greatly appreciated and put to good use to help a family who need the support of the community at this time.
